This article explains the pressure, flow, and precision relationship and how to use it when evaluating a machine.<\/p>\n<h2>How Do Pressure, Flow, and Orifice Size Set Water Jet Cutting Machine Performance?<\/h2>\n<p>Pressure, flow, and orifice size interact, and the machine data makes sense only when they are read together. Pressure determines the speed of the water jet exiting the orifice. Flow rate determines how much water is available to accelerate abrasive particles and carry them through the cut. The orifice diameter sets the jet diameter, which in turn affects kerf width and energy density.<\/p>\n<p>Standard production machines run at either 60,000 psi or 90,000 psi. A 50 hp pump at 60,000 psi typically delivers around 1.0 U.S. gallon per minute through a 0.012-inch orifice. Moving to 90,000 psi usually requires a 100 hp pump and an orifice in the 0.010-inch range. The kerf changes from roughly 0.035 inch to 0.025 inch. A pressure rating without enough flow cannot support a production abrasive cut, and a large orifice without enough pressure produces a wide, slow kerf.<\/p>\n<h2>What Pressure Ranges Match Different Material Thicknesses?<\/h2>\n<p>Pure waterjet cutting works well for rubber, foam, textiles, plastics, and food products at 30,000 to 60,000 psi without abrasive. Abrasive waterjet is the production choice for steel, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, stone, glass, and composites.<\/p>\n<p>For carbon steel up to about 50 mm, 60,000 psi covers most gasket and structural cutting if the shop accepts a moderate edge taper and lower speed. Shops cutting 75 mm to 150 mm plate usually move to 90,000 psi because the higher jet velocity maintains a narrower kerf and better edge squareness. This is not a linear speed gain. Energy input, abrasive consumption, and pump maintenance all increase. If water flow is too low, abrasive particles do not accelerate properly and the cut becomes rough. If abrasive feed is too high, the mixing tube wears faster and edge quality drops. Most production machines run 0.5 to 2.0 pounds of abrasive per minute.<\/p>\n<p>Edge quality is not only a pressure problem. The mixing tube, focus tube, and standoff height determine taper and striation. A machine running 60,000 psi with correct abrasive delivery can produce a smoother edge than a 90,000 psi machine with a worn mixing tube.<\/p>\n<p>If your program involves interrupted cuts, laminated materials, or edge tolerances tighter than \u00b10.2 mm, it is worth confirming the abrasive delivery set before finalizing the machine package. A high-quality gantry machine may be specified at \u00b10.005 inch positioning accuracy and \u00b10.001 inch repeatability. That does not mean every cut edge will be within \u00b10.005 inch. The actual cut path is affected by jet lag, taper, material stress relief, and part hold-down. A light frame can flex when the gantry accelerates. A weak table can let the plate move during piercing. The result looks like drift in the cut line even though the servo system is accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Taper compensation is another precision item. On plates thicker than 25 mm, the jet bends as it moves, so the entry and exit profiles are not the same. Machines with dynamic taper control adjust the cutting head angle to keep the machined edge square.<\/p>\n<p>In heavy shops, we have found that cut blank accuracy changes downstream welding time more than most buyers expect. A 90,000 psi pump on a light gantry will not hold tolerance as well as a 60,000 psi machine with servo drives and a stiff frame. For most shops, pressure should be chosen for thickness and speed, while precision is bought in the machine structure and drive system.<\/p>\n<h3>What water flow rate should a machine have for abrasive cutting?<\/h3>\n<p>A common assumption is that more flow is always better. In abrasive waterjet cutting, flow must match the orifice and mixing tube. Too little flow starves abrasive acceleration; too much flow wastes water and accelerates component wear. Most production machines run between 0.5 and 1.5 GPM depending on pump power. The right figure depends on the abrasive feed rate and the kerf width your part drawings can tolerate.<\/p>\n<h3>How accurate can a water jet cutting machine cut thick plate?<\/h3>\n<p>It depends on plate thickness and edge quality target. For plate up to roughly 25 mm, a high-quality machine can hold about \u00b10.1 mm to \u00b10.2 mm with slower cutting. On 100 mm plate, taper and jet lag make \u00b10.5 mm or more realistic unless the machine has taper compensation. Thick plate work should be quoted with a defined edge squareness and a test cut, not only a positioning accuracy figure.<\/p>\n<h3>Is pure waterjet worth considering for our materials?<\/h3>\n<p>In our experience, pure waterjet makes sense only for soft materials such as rubber, foam, plastic, textiles, or food products. For metal, glass, stone, or composites, abrasive waterjet is the right starting point because it cuts faster and leaves a cleaner edge in thicker sections.
